Look Ma, No Hands!

It’s been easy to be upset with modern culture these days. I could go on for hours about the areas where we are falling short. BUT there’s one thing I think we are doing well with: reusable water bottles. I love that it’s totally commonplace for folks to carry a water bottle along with them to fill and reduce waste (and for the cheapskate in me, to avoid the cost of having to BUY water when you go out for a quick meal). It’s a total 180 from just a few years ago (pre-COVID) where most places wouldn’t allow you to bring a water vessel. I love everything about this trend, and my kitchen cabinets hold the proof (yikes, overconsumption!). We have a water bottle for every occasion. Big ones, small ones, kid ones, straw, sipper, the whole gamut. The only challenge is the actual CARRYING of the water bottle.

On this past year’s trip to Disney (a trip we LOVE to take in the blazing summer), we brought some favorite aluminum bottles to keep filling throughout the days at the parks and beach. They were lifesavers, able to keep water cold and ice from melting for our whole days in the record-breaking heat. The only trouble we encountered was actually HOLDING the bulky bottles (especially for the kids). Yarn to the rescue. In a literal queue for some rides, I created this pattern for a water bottle holder that made it easy to cart the water bottles for each of us. I made the original from Lion Brand recycled cotton that I had on hand and a 5 mm hook. It took roughly two wait times to make the bottle holder, and maybe one more line to complete the strap. I was able to make this holder so quickly, so I made one for each of us to carry on our trip. But, the design wasn’t totally perfect. It needed to be snug enough to hold a large bottle, but not hard to insert it. It needed a strap that could support the heavy full bottle without stretching. When we got back home, I made some adjustments and reimagined the strap to prevent it from stretching uncontrollably and needing to be knotted. I also added this wood loop so instead of the strap, you could choose to attach it to a bag with a carabiner. This was the result. I’ve made SO many this year for friends who see it an think it’s a winner, and they’ve even been gifted quite a lot in our small town, so I’m often seeing them around town being used with success. I hope you love it!

*If you are looking for a holder for the all-too-popular Stanley cup that seems to have taken over the world (My Corksicle is still the King of my Heart, but the Stanley’s a good boi, too.) Check out the Sidekick sling in my Ravelry store, which accommodates the handle of the Stanley (and similar) cups. I hope you make it, gift it, and love using it to make staying hydrated even more fashionable.

A note on the name. As I mentioned, we love visiting Disney each summer and we especially love the portion of the trip where we veg out at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. I whipped up the first couple of these bottle holders while lounging at the pool, watching the kids swim. One of the cast members there was also a crocheter, and was SO interested in this design. I hoped to make an extra one for her before we left, but I lost at yarn chicken on that trip. Here’s hoping we see her again next year, and I can give her this new and improved version of the cup holder.

While the pattern is available here for free, you can also purchase the Ad-free PDF in my Ravelry store. Your support for these patterns allows me to maintain this website to offer more free patterns. I truly appreciate your support.
